Gavin's first painting started out as an agreement with fellow artist Richard Scott. When Gavin approached Richard to buy one of his pieces, Richard replied that he'd rather swap one. The result was Gavin returning to painting, after a ten year break - much as Richard suspected would be the case.

Gavin's first portrait, measuring 50cm by 50cm, began with this photo of Richard. Gavin decided to base the work on Richard's right eye and cheek - a close crop - a slice of Richard.
